The stupa at Tiratanaloka contains some of the ashes of Dhardo Rimpoche, friend and teacher to Sangharakshita. He was regarded by Sangharakshita as being 'a living Bodhisattva'.
Other stupas containing the Rimpoche's ashes are at Padmaloka in Norfolk,Sudharshanaloka in New Zealand, and Guhyaloka in Spain, as well as in Kalimpong, where he lived running a school for the children of Tibetan refugees. The stupa bears the motto of his school, 'Cherish the Doctrine, Live United, Radiate Love.'
Sangharakshita chose the design of a 'pratharya' or 'miracle' stupa for Tiratanaloka because he said, following the Buddha, that the greatest miracle is when a woman or a man changes their way of life, commits themselves to their Going for Refuge to the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha and it is this commitment which is marked by the ceremony of ordination.
